TWO STARTING POINTS. YOUR CHOICES.

Keep the classics.
Or take a different turn.

Illustrative routes to start a conversation. Your travel dates, flights and priorities decide the final shape.

10 DAYS / 9 NIGHTS

City days & an overnight pause

Tokyo 4 nights → Hakone 1 → Kyoto 4

For a first visit with city neighborhoods, one slower inn stay and time to explore Kyoto without changing hotels every day.

  • Three overnight bases, with different rhythms.
  • Leave space for a museum, food interest or family day.
  • Check the inn’s meals, bathing arrangements and arrival window.

12 DAYS / 11 NIGHTS

Old streets, village roofs & a special rail day

Tokyo 4 nights → Kanazawa 3 → Kyoto 4

For travelers drawn to Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go, with time to enjoy the places between the headline cities. This route replaces the Hakone stop.

  • One Kanazawa day and one separate Shirakawa-go day.
  • Compare ordinary, Green Car and optional Gran Class on the Tokyo–Kanazawa journey.
  • Plan the onward Kyoto connection via Tsuruga with luggage and walking time in mind.
Planning $349 Within the up-to-14-day plan; travel extra

Both ideas assume arrival around Tokyo and departure around Kansai. A return flight from Tokyo changes the last travel day and may need another night. Your final route and budget are researched for your dates.

WHERE PERSONAL PLANNING EARNS ITS PLACE

Choose the memorable bit.
Make the rest work around it.

01 / THE TRAIN

Is Gran Class worth it for you?

Compare the extra cost with your other priorities. Check the exact train: some Gran Class services do not include an attendant, drinks or a light meal. Dietary needs, seat availability and children’s arrangements need their own check.

02 / THE VILLAGE DAY

Shirakawa-go, with a way back.

Choose outward and return transport together. Check the reservation requirements, seasonal conditions and the walking that suits your group. Keep the evening flexible rather than relying on a tight onward connection.

03 / THE HANDOVER

One less thing to figure out.

Know which station, which transfer and what to do with the luggage. The Kanazawa–Kyoto journey needs a Tsuruga connection; it isn’t one direct Gran Class ride all the way.

FIRSTHAND PERSPECTIVE

A highlight from my own travels.
A possibility for yours.

Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and travelling in Gran Class were highlights of my own Japan trip. I’ve also built and travelled on DIY itineraries with my two young children and my parents. That experience helps me look beyond a list of sights to the days you’ll actually have.

Your plan includes the daily flow, hotel shortlist, booking links, budget assumptions, alternatives, collaborative refinements and agreed hotel-rate rechecks while eligible cancellation remains available.

Practical trip support is included, 09:00–19:00 IST daily. Questions and refinements are welcome throughout the planning.
